  • This is Google Earthed at the famous "triangle" intersection to Burgoyne Bay where much action took place. Titled and originally aired "Ah... The Money, The Money, The Money" - The Battle for Saltspring Island, on CBC in the series named the "Nature of Things" with David Suzuki, this documentary is a presentation by the National Film Board of Canada. This was transferred from an old VHS tape, so you can see the video quality is a little jumpy but viewable. Local Islander Mort Ransen, who directed this great documentary and made it possible, also directed an Emmy Award winning movie years ago named "Margaret's Museum." I would have to say that this is a fun documentary to watch and is probably one of the best films produced that brings out the character and the beauty of the people and the island. These were interesting times. I played my part. At about 30:35 into the documentary you will see someone's hand holding a cell phone up to Rod's head, who is in lock down position. He is talking to his daughter on the phone about where to find the chicken in the fridge. That hand is my hand in that scene holding the cellphone. I also did a lot of photography then and there is one really quick scene where I'm standing in the background taking a picture (27:19) from behind the crowd while Sgt Darbyshire checks on Rod to see how he is doing. I once asked Mort if he would do a sequel to this documentary and he laughed saying that someone else would have to do it. Perhaps that someone else will one day be me, there's still plenty of footage flying around of what followed those years. In the months that followed the filming for this documentary, the highlight of my achievement in this struggle was organizing the Lady Godiva demonstration which reached TVs right across Canada when Briony Penn rode naked on a horse in downtown Vancouver outside the corporate offices to get attention to the cause. She was supported by many flanks of topless women from the island. It was a large March that moved counterclockwise several blocks around the corporate building and it ended with cooperation with the police just before rush hour. This was the pivotal turning point that created the impact we had not dreamed would happen. I give credit to Briony Penn for doing most to the hard work. It is a long story, but since this documentary was made, many great events followed and in the end we saved much of what we might have lost.

  • People who lived on Salt Spring Island five years ago will remember a Saturday march in mid-March followed by a rally in Centennial Park. This was in solidarity with people from all around the world protesting the plans for an attack on Iraq by the US and some of its allies. We came out 1000 strong for the march around Ganges. There were banners, drums, chanting and just plain marching. At the end of the march we assembled in the park and were inspired by guest speakers and music. We were glad that Canada opted out at the last minute. This coming Saturday, March 15, at 10:30 in the morning, the SSI Coalition of Concerned Citizens will again hold a rally that will emphasize what Canada's peaceful role in the world should be. Speakers taking part include Christine Hunt, Andrew Lewis, Marion Pape, Briony Penn, Sheila Reid and Julian West. Between speeches we also will be treated to music by Alan Moberg, Phil Vernon, Susan Cogan, Sue Newman and the Raging Grannies. Two local poets, Murray Reiss and Cherie Geauvreau, will each do a short reading. In addition we will have a snippit of theatre by some 6- and 7-year olds under the direction of Sue Newman and a brief presentation by some high school students. Terri Bibby will have her woven Hiroshima banners on display. Collaborating groups include Peace Works and the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace, as well as many individuals. 10:30 Alan Moberg (music) 10:35 Marion Pape (speaker) 10:38 Murray Reiss (poet/reader) 10:41 Sue Newman's small group (drama) 10:46 Christine Hunt (speaker) family event, was replaced by Eilleen Wttewaall 10:49 Susan Cogan (music) 10:54 Andrew Lewis (speaker) 10:57 High School students 11:03 Briony Penn (speaker) 11:06 Phil Vernon (music) 11:11 Sheila Reid (speaker) 11:14 Raging Grannies (music) 11:19 Julian West (speaker) 11:22 Cherie Geauvreau (poet/reader) 11:25 Sue Newman (song leader)

  • Can you believe it? Its been 7 years since Shooglenifty performed on Salt spring island to a blow out audience to fundraise thousands of dollars for the Salt Spring Island Conservancy. A very short number of years after that great event, the CBC radio host David Grierson who MC'd the event, died and will always be fondly remembered by Saltspringers for his help and support during that grueling campaign. So much has happened since then. It was August 22, 2001, less than a month before the 9/11 event. We were all hoping for a better way to start the millenion. I borrowed David Shebib's camera then to film the Shooglenifty event over the course of several hours. It was one of those events you'll never forget. The Scottish supergroup Shooglenifty performed its blend of traditional Gaelic and funkadelic to a sold-out crowd at the Farmer's Institute to raise $7,719.69 for the Mt. Maxwell lake watershed. Tom Gossett, Salt Spring Island Water Preservation (SSIWPS) Society Director said," We saw a big cross-section of the community and a lot of youth represented at the event. It was a tremendous success." They are an amazing band that were on their B.C. tour from Edinburgh and came to play the benefit concert for the watershed on Salt Spring Ilsand. When David Grierson brought Karen Hudson up on the stage to welcome everyone, and she saw the sea of cheering faces from Calgary, Vancouver, Galiano, Victoria and even Scotland, Karen knew what it was to be part of a wonderful community working to preserve it's natural heritage. Thank you everyone. Now, those memories will live on in You Tube. The event was transfered from an ancient VHS tape, unearthed from a dust ladenned shelf deep in a dark cellar and was digitized and compressed to the "Saltspring Time-Machine" playlist on the Saltspringpictures Channel: http://ca.youtube.com/saltspringpictures
