In winter months, we often paddling in windy conditions, and later find out that BC Ferries has suspended some sailings due to weather. Thus the title for this little production.
Last Friday (January 4th 2008) was no exception. Craig and I headed out of Oak Bay after being photographed for a local newspaper - the reporter must have thought we were nuts. Rounding the breakwater, we discovered moderate but quickly building seas, and the wind speed continued to increase. Towards the end of the paddle, the sustained wind speed was a reported 37 kts (68 km/h) with gusts of up to 48 kts (89 km/h). These are the strongest winds I've paddled in to date, and although we both made it back unscathed, I was quickly shown that I need a little more practise at boat handling in high winds.
